And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? - Act 16:25-30
We had a chance last week to visit with old friends at the “Center For Jewish-Christian Understanding & Cooperation” (CJCUC). We have banged heads with them many times through the years, and their main objective of the meeting was wanting to know why so many Christians are now celebrating Passover, and having Passover seders. REALLY!….The Passover Lamb, The sacrificial Lamb, the blood of the Lamb, The Lamb of God… Bess & I gave them an ear-full during the 2-hour session….we think we planted some new seeds, but NO, the Rabbi and his associate did not want to know “what must they do to be saved”…not yet anyway…pray for Rabbi Abe Reichman and David Nekrutman.
Speaking of prisons, we were blessed to meet and host Manny & Barbara Mill who have a tremendous prison ministry in Illinois. Manny was a recent guest speaker at Calvary Aurora. They were traveling with Bob & Diana Wolfson, who were making their first trip to Israel. Manny & Bess were both born in Cuba, so there was instant “kesher” (connection)…Bob is a Jewish believer from Chicago and a White Sox fan…that didn’t go over so well…Just kidding.
“How good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity”
Charles Dickens wrote in his famous novel “A Tale Of Two Cities “
“it was the worst of times & it was the best of times”.
So it was this week in Israel. It began with Holocaust Remembrance Day, followed by the memorial for the Fallen Soldiers & Victims of Terror, followed immediately by Israel Independence Day- celebrating 69 years of existence for the modern State of Israel. What a contrast. The prophet Jeremiah said it best in Chapter 31 verse 13.
“Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.” – Jeremiah 31:13
